7 blogs

how hard can it be? i was supposed to write 7 things about me & 7 other blogs i like.. and ones not already listed on the blog before me. i forgot the 2nd bit in yesterday's post, but here i am making amends.. 7 super blogs that i love reading & smile when i see their new posts pop up in my google reader. 7 super blogs i'd like to pass on the versatility award to..

1. seventy tree. i bought some fun typewriter xmas cards from the lovely kerry & discovered her blog. i was even lucky enough to win one of her gorgeous prints recently. update: kerry's 7 things are here.

2. sarah wandering. "one part big city. one part small town. one part wandering." i found sarah's blog via  design sponge when they featured her amazing. amazing. hand painted rug. i'm also loving sarah's recommended xmas movie viewing in the lead up to xmas.

3. smallest things. so frenchy, so chic. blogging about her life in paris. i love seeing a comment pop up in my email from the lovely blogger 'franglaise', because i think "a comment from my parisian friend!" is that weird? i hope that doesn't come across as weird.

4. little pinwheel. versatile is the word. mama, owner of the little pinwheel shop & co-owner of maeve online mag. is there anything this woman can't do? i was lucky enough to meet hayley a couple of months ago in person & above all, hayley has a beautiful & creative energy about her.

5. rummey bears. i love anna's superb photos. such perfect composition & colour. yep, when i think rummey bears, i think colour.

6. little glowing lights. more gorgeous photography, food, flowers & styling. i'm not the only one who thinks so either.. catherine was featured on sfgirlbybay recently. update: you can read catherine's 7 things here.

7. olive & joy. lovely, clever julie with a killer eye. what can i say.. i like her style.

versatility award

the lovely kellie from dear olive awarded me a versatile blogger award a month ago & it's taken me this long to respond. i'm versatile alright. architect. mama. tardy blogger. but i'm a super wife right husband?? i have to divulge 7 things about myself. here goes.

1. one of my favourite words is modernity. i like how it sounds. i like what it stands for. say it. you'll like it too.

2. i can get lost daydream-designing. it's true. if i get stuck somewhere without pen & paper i'll start designing places, normally houses, in my head. when combined with sleep deprivation, this can lead down a strange path. when mirka was a newborn, my coping mechanism for being awake at 3am & staring at the wall while settling her back to sleep would be to design-daydream. i knew i needed to get some real sleep when i started designing a house for the octomum & her tribe.

3. i'm a total piggy when it comes to chocolate. oh to be one of those people that take out a block of chocolate, snap off a row (one row! come on!) and put the chocolate away. so civilised. so unlike what a surveillance tape of me would look like. it would be ugly people. ugg-lee.

4. i enjoy making decisions. once it's made. it's made. hmm, that makes me sound quite close minded doesn't it? i hope i'm not. i like to think of myself as open minded but decisive. the only decisions i truly leave open though are design ones, because gawd knows a client will throw something in the mix later down the line. but that's ok because it gives me another opportunity to design & problem solve.

5. i love accelerating. not speeding. i'm too much of a goody 2 shoes for that, but i love planting my foot. so good when i'm driving somewhere & join a freeway. zero to 100 as fast as the subi will do it. it's no alfa romeo & not as much fun as the smartie, but it's as good as i got.

6. i like being naughty with kingsley. in front of her, so she tells me off. example? vivi had a terrible habit of giving the old elbow, nudge-nudge, when she wanted to point something out.. anyway after a car trip full of elbow nudges from vivi, i got out of the car & started singing "don't go nudging my arm"..  you know, to the tune of "don't go breakin my heart". anyways, vivi was oblivious until i could contain my laughter no longer, but kingsley, kingsley, was giggling & giving me daggers, telling me to be quiet. joy.

7. number 7. well i've blurted my way here & now i've got nothin' for number 7. well, you've come this far. it's been years since i've been on a big holiday. my last big adventure was to the u.s. & before that was to italy. so, at the moment in my daydreaming head of mine, i'm toying with the idea of going to thailand to stay in a treehouse and ride an elephant or to travel to turkey & be blown away by the hagia sophia, like i was by the pantheon at night in rome. magic.

update: forgot to mention the image is a lot of thumbnail snaps of one of my projects nearing completion a few years ago.

orla kiely teaser

oo-la-la, as if the pillowcases weren't enough, i had to go snooping around the orla kiely u.k. website & now i'm in love with these little fellas. unfortunately the ceramics aren't available in the u.s. & i don't have an accomplice in the u.k., like i do with vivi in the u.s. the dark grey sugar bowl would look so good in my kitchen too. bummer.

orla kiely sweet dreams

i bought these lovelies on one of my last free days before charlie was born. i had seen them in blogland somewhere and they had been floating around in my mind ever since, so who was i to walk away from the orla kiely bedding section when i found myself aimlessly wandering through myer? oh manchester. how i love thee.

charlie's 3 month portrait

little smiley charlie. this kid loves giving us big, big, smiles. the biggest are first thing in the morning or when mirka is around. charlie loves her. his eyes follow her around the room in total fascination. mirka loves him back, but i'm not 100% sure she knows he will become a little person & not just her little "charlie boy". she watches everything i do like a hawk & then projects it on to grover. if i put charlie in the baby bjorn carrier, then mirka zips up grover in her jumper.. so cute! and it goes on & on. it's just as fascinating for me to see mirka role model with grover, as it is for her to watch me with charlie in the first place. people ask me if he is a good sleeper and i think he is. he has been driving me a bit bonkers, wanting 2-3 hourly feeds during the day lately, but at least he normally sleeps from 9pm to 3am overnight. i couldn't tell you what happens between the 3am feed and when the husband wakes up around 7am though. i know there's normally another feed in there somewhere, but once charlie wakes up and i move him from his cradle to our bed, we fall asleep together until i wake up properly around 7am. the few hours of co-sleeping snuggles are really lovely, but i also find it exhausting. i think it's because i only sleep lightly with him next to me and i can't move without disturbing him. still, for now it allows me to not really have to wake up or get out of bed and that's a good thing.

p.s. thank you for all the lovely comments on my charlie teapot post. it means a lot to receive all your lovely comments and tam, i send you a big, big hug. xx

p.p.s. since the out-take from charlie's last portrait was such a hit, here is another one.. he loves it when i squish his little face up and make funny kissing noises & he rewards me with lovely, bubbly, baby noises.

lunch break

mirka & charlie had a visit from their cousin billy and didn't mirka love having little billy follow her around. here is a moment between the two of them sharing lunch on the back deck. so cute in their sunhats. like 2 old men gossiping on a park bench in an italian piazza. or like tradies demolishing a couple of pies on a constuction site. even grover got in on the act. smile.

charlie teapot

man. more than 2 weeks since my last post. that went quick. the truth is, i think the realisation that after my apparently very rare, post-birth hematoma, that in another time or place, i would probably be dead (drama queen much?).. has shaken me a little. crept into my pschye or something. i'm lucky the seemingly small symptoms were recognised by an awesome midwife before i lost too much blood and i was lucky i had my own obstetrician that could take me into surgery straight away. i was lucky i was already in hospital and had a calm, kind anesthetist on staff that night. i was lucky i had a perfectly healthy baby sleeping in his daddy's arms while i was whisked away, but it has definitely played on my mind. not at the time. it's never at the time is it? anyways, i'm fine, but it is a weird feeling, feeling like i've used up another one of my nine lives or whatever. so, what does all this have to do with the photos? this beautiful marimekko teapot is what i like to call my 'charlie teapot'. when mirka was born, the husband gave me the beautiful eames rocker & i wanted to buy something special to celebrate charlie boy's birth. something beautiful, but everyday too. something that would become part of my daily life, like the eames rocker has. plus, it matches the mug the husband gave me for my last birthday.. so when i saw this beauty whilst out shopping with kingsley, i decided it was the perfect little something. special.

yarraville treats

our little family loves moseying around yarraville. pah-lease, who doesn't, you ask? well, if we're not at the corner shop for a weekend breakfast, lurking amongst the treasures in the second hand junk shop, trying to keep up with mirka at her favourite park or indulging in some pear & dark chocolate (pear & dark chocolate!) dessert pizza at l'uccellino on a rare night out, then you'll find us at hausfrau bakery. gawd that place is good. i'm a little addicted to their minted chicken baguette for lunch at the moment, but let me tell you, if paying 4 bucks a pop for a mini treat is your kind of way to sink your cash, then this place is for you. and me.

charlie's 2 month portrait

just look at that big round tummy. i love how the 'tie' accentuates it in the last photo. charlie chumba-wumba, we love you! we're getting more smiles, especially in the morning & slowly, slowly, longer sleeps through the night. anyway here is the 2 month portrait. on the eames rocker. not that you can really see it in these ones because he is too little, but trust me, charlie knows all about the rocker. you just can't see mirka's busy little hands on the side of the chair giving it a good rock while poor charlie was lucky to stay aboard & mummy tried to take some photos. chaos. we had a good laff at some of the out takes.. especially the ones where charlie had a big cheesy gummy smile & looked like a fat, balding, salesman in his short sleeves & business tie. so funny.

p.s. you wanna see the cheesy photo don't you? i knew it.

happy halloween

hope you all had a happy halloween. we did a mad dash to get some decorations up in time before the late afternoon trick or treaters started visiting. i have to say i love halloween. ever since i went to visit vivi in new orleans, out & about amongst all the halloween cheer, kids & adults alike. it is a magic night in the states & i really hope that it takes off more in australia. i don't know why aussies are so grumpy & against it. if you get into it, it is so much fun. you should have seen the joy on the little trick or treaters faces when they saw the front of our house & garden completely covered in huge cotton webbing. they had to walk through the giant web and past the little ghouls & ghosts staked amongst the plants to get to our door. when they knocked, the husband would pause & then open it really fast as he yelled "boo!" oh man, they squealed, jumped & absolutely loved it!! the other thing i love about halloween is that it is just a fun night to dress up, walk around your neighbourhood & be part of your community.. all out & about together. there's no big expense, shopping, presents, travel or stress, like there is for xmas. just cheap thrills, lollies & costumes.

p.s. how great is the skeleton bunny? i saw it on maikkestore blog

making plans

dwell studio owls blanket
kidostore doonas
i feel like our little charlie is growing before my eyes. he is 2 months old already, which means we've only got a few more months until he can sit up & it's time to move him out of his cradle. because we often have interstate, international & what sometimes feels like intergalactic guests, our spare room needs to remain as a guest bedroom.. for my sanity at least. meaning mirka & charlie will be sharing a room. for now at least. so, as much as i love the bright pink & orange colours in mirka's room as it is now, i'm planning on switching over to blues & greens when charlie graduates from his cradle & our bedroom. oh man, it will be so nice to sleep in pitch black darkness again & without the magic white noise cd playing on repeat all night. that cd is crazy-makin stuff, but it works a treat at keeping charlie asleep. so, the plan is to get some joinery made up in the kiddlywinks' room that will be their beds with lots of storage underneath. then it's a matter of what bedding to give the room some personality & that's ok for both genders.. not too baby either.. i don't mind splurging on some nice bedding, but i don't want to do it every 2 years. with all that in mind & using charlie's dwellstudio owls blanket as a starting point, i've ordered some gorgeous soft grey & blue doonas from kidostore that i'll pep up with some cushions (made by kingsley - hello kingsley, that's ok isn't it??) out of the happy fabrics i bought from central park.

update: in case you're wondering, the bedding prints are danish brand rosenberg & the owl cushion is donna wilson.

write your name

on your bike. your name on your bike people! as seen here via the cool hunter. so clever with the 'i' in the top one marked with the white stripe. how much do i want one that says captain? or captn. a lot. with a cute little basket on the front too. would have saved me a lot of time as a kid, when i was forever locking up my bike in scorching 40 degree heat, to the bike racks out the front of the local olympic pool. i mean, who would steal a bike with someone elses name on it? bespoke is a word that is overused in the design world, but this, this, is bespoke.

colour antidote

time for a little black & white simplicity via therese sennerholt. on my good days, sometimes i surprise myself by being pretty damn fantastic, just like number one says, but then you know, the inevitable happens & i need to send out an s.o.s. along the lines of number two. or maybe i am actually just a little fucked up! (number 3). somewhere between the motivational & confessional methinks.

Friday, October 22, 2010

i had my final appointment with my obstetrician this week & it was a strange feeling leaving the hospital when i realised it would be for last time. or that's the plan anyway. i guess the having babies part of my life is behind me. who knows, maybe if we're crazy enough to think we can survive a third round of sleep deprivation, we might re-consider, but at this stage we're concentrating on our happy little family of four. total. plus i'm not sure my body is ever gonna be the same after number 2, let alone number 3. if you happen to be out & about and think you see me, but then think, oh no, the captain wouldn't be seen dead in a big ol' jumper and track pants, well think again. yes, it's depressing, but hey i have little, chumba-wumba charlie, happy & healthy at home. if i could be bothered getting off my bum, i could probably do something about it, but the thought of giving up lollies & chocolate, on top of the lack of sleep right now could bring me to tears. anyways, knowing that little charlie is our last baby, i'm trying to soak up as much newborn-ness i can. sentimental.

musk sticks

the husband said my taste in lollies makes me old school. well, maybe i am.

colour love

i seem to be a bit addicted to colour at the moment. maybe it's the sleep deprivation. i saw these painted russian dolls by audree lapierre on bloesem & was instantly drawn to them. bright.

windows are over rated

did you all see this gorgeous home on lucy's blog the other day?  as soon as i saw that huge pink painting of the oh-so-cool, but oh-so-obsolete, video tapes, titled last days by dane lovett, i wanted it. even the husband said he loved it. much like this other awesome painting, titled red stripe by virginia coventry, (spotted over at daily imprint), you would need some serious wall space to dedicate, but so worth it. makes me want to rip out some windows and make us some big ass wall space.

sweet songbird

it's true. the magpies smashed the saints. another grand final lost. fine. i'm done with that. now when i think of magpies, i choose to think of these beautiful pieces by magpie & rye.  i absolutely love this balance necklace and although i'm not a gold wearer, the hexagon ring is a little something special, no?

we're all dreaming of a summer holiday

so it's a little bonkers, but i have this fantasy about owning a winnebago. top of the line. in fact i had a ticket in a big charity raffle where first prize was your choice of $300K worth of vehicle. maserati/ aston martin/ winnebago. i was so excited about the prospect of winning me a winne that i told the husband all about my lucky ticket, only to be told over his dead body would we choose the winne over the maserati. he also went on to say that i would be going from the sublime to the ridiculous, considering at the time i was driving a smart car. anyways, that was a long sentence! no seriously, this is going somewhere. i've found the next best thing.. a cricket trailer! quirky, colourful & clever. it has a cute story behind the design, which you can read here, but who cares? i'm sold.

while i'm on the subject..

while i'm thinking about xmas, how beautiful is this oak christmas tree from design for use? the porcelain tealight candles & little stars come with it & it simply pulls apart when xmas is over, ready to be stored away until the next year. i really, really, like this tree. simple. modern. timber. porcelain. clever.

thinking about xmas

it's early, crazy early, i know. but if you want to order a gorgeous hand stamped ceramic star by paper boat press to hang on your tree this year, then you need to order it by this friday. we have one for mirka & have ordered another for little charlie. anyways, just thought i'd let all y'all know.

update: paper boat press have extended the cut off date for ordering until midnight on wednesday, october 20th.

little pinwheel

photo by the lovely hayley from little pinwheel blog

what a nice surprise. i checked in at one of my favourite blogs, little pinwheel, to find this gorgeous photo of my gracie girl. it's from hayley's post about our recent meet up / blind date! it is so awesome making new friendships through blogging & amazing really.. but maybe not either, because when you think about it, we are all sharing part of our lives. i started this blog as a creative outlet after leaving work as an architect to have mirka & i never imagined the blog world would be one of such generosity, honesty, humour & friendship.. and i love that it seems to be dominated by women. it's funny where a blog takes you. i started off posting short & simple posts, more about design than my life, but now i don't seem able to stop myself babbling away. i never know what i'm going to write until it's done and there you have it. blog world rocks.

spring at last

it feels like spring time around here at last. i thought blossom season was over, but then i noticed the row of trees outside mirka's childcare covered in these beauties. at first glance they just look like bright green leaves, but then you realise they are the most gorgeous papery green blossoms. more & more, i'm loving green flowers. anyways, how do you like my little ceramic bottle? look familiar? i can't believe i bought it a year ago already. it's from pigeon toe ceramics, who make such beautiful things.

charlie's 1 month portrait

perfect timing hey? mirka's monthly portraits finished up at 24 months, just in time for charlie's to start. our sweet little chumba-wumba is one month old already... and already more than 5kgs. yep, i wasn't just saying chumba-wumba for cuteness. he is out of newborn nappies & has busted out of his triple zero onesies. we are being flashed the occasional gummy smile & he has started making those little pre-talk noises like "ooo" when he is 'talking' to us. our little charlie harper is a real snuggler. we put him to sleep in his cradle, but once he wakes me at night around 2am, he gets to snuggle in with us because he seems to go back to sleep so much quicker. he also seems to sleep really soundly & for much longer if he is hot. really hot.. sleeps the best when he is swaddled, under 2 blankets & with the heater pumping. the husband & i wake up with the covers thrown off & totally parched, but if that's what gets the baby to sleep for hours, then we're not gonna fight it. sleep is king.
